There’s a lot of garbage out there

but there’s also a LOT of good if you take the time to look for it

Since I was little, I've adored thrift shopping with my mom, who astutely started me in sewing lessons at 7 years old. For a long time I avoided committing to a career in the fashion industry because I didn’t want to contribute to the materialistic universe of overconsumption and waste. Still I couldn’t stop creating!

The lightbulb came on when I realized that the ways I’ve been creating since middle school—reworking thrift store finds, experimenting with my foremothers’ fabric scraps, reimagining the ways clothing can look and make you feel—is not only my greatest passion, but exactly the way we’re going to change the conversation.

Since relocating to NYC in 2017, I’ve been navigating sustainable practices in a city built on disposable convenience and guess what? It’s doable! All it takes is a commitment to making small choices, better. It doesn’t happen all at once, and it’s not always cute. But it’s necessary. And it works.

When we consider the source, materials, and future life cycle of every consumable product, it starts a chain reaction of change in which you are then a motivating participant. We’re all connected to this one Earth whether we like it or not, so wouldn’t be better if we committed to loving it?

I believe it’s our duty as humans to take care of the things that have been made before us, especially if they have lasted until we got hold of them. If every one of us built a sense of social and ecological responsibility into each purchase, we all ultimately become more intentional—and powerful—in our consumerism.

GrandMother Goods is an invitation to live, dress, and think more sustainably; not perfectly, but with intention & with community 💛
